Winskill Aquatic & Fitness Centre Replacement
Overview
The Winskill Aquatic & Fitness Centre is a new recreation facility replacing an existing aquatic centre that had been in service for nearly 50 years. The facility includes a 10-lane, 25-metre lap pool, a teaching pool, a leisure pool with a lazy river and water slide, hot and cold plunge pools, a sauna, fitness gym, gymnasium, multi-purpose rooms, and dedicated space for the Boys & Girls Club South Coast. We delivered the complete mechanical scope including plumbing, sheet metal, controls, refrigeration, and fire protection.
The Challenge
Aquatic facilities carry some of the most complex mechanical requirements of any building type. Pool water quality, air quality in natatorium environments, and the sheer scale of hydronic and domestic systems all need to work together reliably. Designing and installing systems that meet these demands in a facility this size, while meeting modern efficiency expectations, requires detailed coordination from the start.
Our Solution
Six air source heat pumps, backed by four electric boilers, deliver primary hydronic heating and cooling to air handling units, heat recovery units, fan coils, radiant flooring, domestic hot water storage, and pool systems. Specialized pool equipment including drum filters, sand filters, gas strippers, UV disinfection, and chemical controllers maintains water quality across all pools. Two large custom-built air handling units supply fresh air to the pool areas. The result is a facility built for modern performance and significantly improved mechanical efficiency compared to what it replaces. Construction is in progress with completion expected June 2028.
